Writing

Language and Literacy are central to our ability to understand, interpret, and communicate about the
world and with each other. Writing is a thoughtful process which requires the writer to contribute his or
her own experiences and thoughts to the written word. The ability to write is fundamental to many
aspects of life, and is central to show understanding in a wide range of areas of the curriculum. As
writing is an everyday necessity, it is important to develop skills which allow individuals to
communicate effectively with others.
At St Kentigern’s writing is a main focus for children in all year groups. Children are immersed in a
range of text types and work through the process of editing and re-drafting in order to experience the
writing process. Applying their written skills in other topics, such as RE and science, enables children
to showcase the skills they learn. In addition, children are given chance to write independently in a
‘big write’ each week. Writing is celebrated each week during assembly.
Parents can support their child’s writing by encouraging children to use the features outlined in the
grammar, punctuation and spelling frameworks which are available on this website.

Reading

The Importance of reading

Learning to read is one of the most important things your child will learn at our school. Everything else depends on it, so we put as much energy as we possibly can into making sure that every child learns to read as quickly as possible.

Reading for pleasure

We want your child to love reading – and to want to read for themselves. This is why we work hard to make sure children develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read.

 Mathematics

 

At St. Kentigern’s School we use Numicon to plan and teach lessons.

Numicon:

  • Develops fluency by using visual, practical base to develop conceptual understanding and fluent recall. The concrete-pictorial-abstract approach is at the heart of Numicon;
  • Helps children to reason mathematically by encouraging them to notice relationships and make generalisation through the use of concrete objects;
  • Develops children into confident problem solvers, using real-life contexts that give every activity a purpose;
  • Encourages every opportunity to use spoken language to explain, justify and reason.

 

Numicon activities are supplemented with exciting, engaging tasks that we have used for many years to develop mathematical understanding and create challenge (such as those from NRICH, BEAM and White Rose).
